Potential Ambassador Re-Nominated After Dust From DUI Case Settles

Aamer Madhani and Fredreka Schouten report for USA Today that an Obama nominee for Netherlands ambassador will get a “second chance” after his arrest for drunk driving.

We obviously don’t know exactly what happened, but according to USA Today, a defense lawyer had been arrested for speeding and impaired driving in the Maryland suburbs just outside of D.C.

The lawyer took himself out of the running – or was asked to by the administration – shortly after the arrest. As far as the criminal case was concerned, the nominee got his conviction set aside and paid a small fine.

That’s apparently enough to satisfy the administration, which has again announced its plans to nominate the lawyer for a post as the next Netherlands ambassador.

See? Sometimes there really are second chances, even after you’ve been charged with a crime. Or it could be that he helped raise at least $700,000, according to USA Today, for President Obama’s political campaigns. At any rate, it’s clear that his arrest for speeding and DUI didn’t spell the end of his opportunity to become an ambassador.
