Dedicated DUI/DWI courts may help cut down on alcohol-related car accidents

Abby Rogers, writing for Business Insider, says that courts dedicated to handling drunk-driving cases might be having an impact on the number of deaths associated with alcohol-related car wrecks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), deaths from these types of wrecks went down 2.5 percent in 2011.

Whether you can tie the 2.5 percent decrease directly to DWI courts or not remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: If you cause a fatal alcohol-related car wreck, you are likely to face felony DUI charges related to vehicle homicide – even if you find yourself inside a courtroom dedicated to helping DUI suspects get rehabilitated.

Given that Maryland law enforcement will be out looking for those suspected of drunk driving throughout the holiday season, it’s best to use caution if you’ve been drinking.

Car accidents tend to spike during the holidays, in large part because of impaired driving, and while in my cases a police officer may not have conducted a lawful traffic stop, it’s best not to have to endure the stress and aggravation of an arrest during the holidays – when you should be safely at home enjoying yourself.
