Bold fashion statement and the middle finger at sentencing hearing for murder

As John Bacon reports for USA Today, the young man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing three classmates made a bold fashion statement at his sentencing hearing yesterday (where the judge gave him three consecutive life sentences) by wearing a plain white T-shirt with the word “killer” scrawled on front.

The judge did not notice the 18-year-old’s fashion statement or would have ordered him to change his shirt, according to a statement released shortly after the hearing. The young man also – perhaps unsurprisingly, given his choice of T-shirt – addressed the courtroom with a statement that certainly leaves an impression:

“The hand that pulled the trigger that killed your sons now masturbates to their memory,” he said. “[Expletive] all of you,” and gave the courtroom the middle finger.

Bacon quotes the judge: “We haven’t been provided a clear motive or even a murky one,” in a case where the young man could have been given the death penalty had he not been 17 at the time of the shootings.

While this case occurred in Ohio, which evidently still has the death penalty, Maryland recently repealed the death penalty (the bill needs Gov. O’Malley’s signature, which he has said he’ll provide), in an historic measure making Maryland the latest in a handful of states that have done away with capital punishment in recent years.
