Which crimes are most common, and where does violent crime rank?

When looking at crime rates in the United States, it’s easy to see that property crimes are far more common than violent crimes. In fact, there are around ten times as many committed each year.

Data from 2003 shows that there were 1,381,259 violent crimes, which comes in as 11.7 percent of the total, and there were 10,435,523 property crimes, which is 88.3 percent of the total.

The most common crime off of this list is larceny or theft, which makes up 59 percent of all crimes. There were 7,021,588 instances in 2003. The least common is theft of a motor vehicle, which was reported just 1,260,471 times, or 10.7 percent.

Not even the most common violent crime ranks so highly. Leading the way was aggravated assault, with 857,921 reported instances, or 7.3 percent of the total. After that came robbery, with 413,402 instances and 3.5 percent, and then forcible rape, with 93,433 reports and 0.8 percent. Last was murder, with 16,503 reports for just 0.1 percent of the total.

An interesting way to look at this is based on frequency. Larceny happens once every 4.5 seconds. Aggravated assault happens once every 36.8 seconds. The least common violent crime, murder, gets the most press, but it only happens once every 31.8 minutes.

As can be seen, violent crimes are still common, but they happen far less often than other types of crime. All those who are accused have a right to a fair trial, and everyone deserves to have his or her day in court after any types of charges have been leveled in Baltimore, Maryland.
