Grand Jury Indicts Man in Middle School Assault

The mere allegation of a sex offense can have lasting effects for someone accused of committing such a crime. It can strain your family and social relationships, destroy your good standing in the community and even impact your career. When the sex crime allegation involves a minor, the consequences are even more serious.

Last week, a Baltimore County grand jury indicted a 21-year-old man who, according to the police, attempted to sexually assault a 12-year-old boy. Law enforcement officials claim the accused man sneaked into Holabird Middle School in December 2010 and assaulted the young boy in a restroom. Upon leaving the restroom, the man reportedly engaged in an altercation with a police officer who was assigned to patrol the property.

The man was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree sex offense, each of which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. He was also charged with two counts of second-degree sex offense, with each carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Further, he was charged with kidnapping, first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, second-degree burglary, trespassing on a posted property, trespassing on school property and false imprisonment.

If convicted of all the charges and sentenced to maximum terms, the man could receive two life sentences, in addition to 130 years behind bars.

This particular case illustrates how important it is for anyone charged with a sex crime to contact an experienced criminal defense attorney immediately. A lawyer will thoroughly investigate the situation and help protect the accused person’s rights, while being mindful of how the charge may impact that individual.
