Baltimore police officer faces sex crime charges involving minor

A sex crime charge is serious. When the alleged sex offense involves a minor, the stakes are even higher. Authorities aggressively investigate and pursue these claims, eager to make arrests. Unfortunately, sometimes well-intentioned actions can be misinterpreted. That is why it is important for anyone charged with a sex crime to consult with an experienced defense attorney as soon as possible.

A Baltimore City police officer has recently been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl who lived in his Edgewood home. The 44-year-old man, who has been with the Baltimore City police since 2001, is facing charges of sexual abuse of a minor, fourth- and third-degree sex offense and second-degree assault.

Harford County Child Advocacy Center detectives arrested the officer. He was later released on bond.

According to the authorities, the man reportedly abused the teenage girl from September of last year until last month. The girl apparently told police that the man hugged her, kissed her frequently and even grabbed her backside. She said the man’s actions made her uncomfortable, and she told him so.

Further, the girl told police that the man discussed his marital problems with her and told her that he was in love with her, as she was “a very beautiful young lady.” The girl claimed these discussions were awkward.

When the Harford County Sheriff’s Office spoke to the accused officer about his relationship with the girl in mid-March, the man explained that his actions had been misinterpreted. He said he did hug and kiss her, but not for sexual gratification. He clarified that the hugs and kisses were completely innocent.

The accused officer was scheduled to appear for a bail review hearing, but he was released on a $100,000 bond before the hearing. A preliminary hearing for the matter is scheduled for April 14.
