Apparent murder-suicide latest in violent crime at UMD College Park

As Caitlin Dewey reports for the Washington Post, the University of Maryland seems to be in the midst of a crime spree. The latest is an apparent murder-suicide involving a firearm, which happened near the University of Maryland College Park campus.

This particular campus has seen its share of violent crime recently.

Last month, as Dewey reports, three armed men beat one student and took his wallet, and later on that day a man with a gun walked into a student apartment building and took a student’s laptop from him.

And this month we’ve had two separate armed robberies.

The murder-suicide is the latest.

UMD students have taken to Twitter to express themselves. “I get more texts from UMD Crime Alert than I do from actual people,” said one. “It’s time for campus PD to focus on crime rather than speeders, underage drinking, loud music, etc.” said another.

Although it seems like a crime spree, Dewey reports that violent crime at UMD is down overall.
