What does Maryland's ignition interlock program entail?

These days, it has become standard procedure for Maryland courts to order drivers convicted of DUI to install an ignition interlock device that prevents them from operating their vehicles while drunk. The system is formally referred to as the Alcohol Breath-Analyzed Ignition Interlock Device. It requires drivers to blow into a tube, which analyzes the amount of alcohol in their bloodstreams. If their alcohol level exceeds a specific level, then their automobiles will be rendered inoperable.

Those convicted of drunk driving who participate in the Ignition Interlock Program must pay all the costs of installing the device and maintaining it. They must also pay costs associated with getting a restricted driver’s license.

Drivers who must install an ignition interlock device in their automobiles will want to read all the materials associated with the program carefully. They will then want to seek out an ignition interlock service provider that is authorized by the Motor Vehicle Administration to put the device in their cars. Once the device has been installed, drivers will be able to take the installation receipt to an MVA office to obtain their restricted driver’s licenses. It is vital that drivers do not forget to return to the ignition interlock service provider every 30 days to maintain the device and upload any data that was captured by the device.

Driving privileges can be vital to an individual’s ability to maintain a job and carry out other functions of his or her daily lives in a convenient fashion. One legal misstep could cause a driver who is participating in the ignition interlock program to lose his or her driving privileges in a heartbeat. For this reason, Maryland drivers convicted of DUI may wish to speak with a qualified DUI attorney to understand more about their ignition interlock devices and the various rules and regulations that govern them.
