Sex crime charges to be dropped against Strauss-Kahn

On Tuesday, prosecutors will drop sexual assault charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn. The French politician resigned as head of the International Monetary Fund after he was accused by a hotel maid of sexually assaulting her when she went into his room to clean it. Prosecutors say that they have doubts about the maid’s credibility and do not want to present the case before a jury.

The case is largely one of he-said, she-said, and prosecutors don’t believe they can prove the case against Strauss-Kahn beyond a reasonable doubt with the maid’s word against that of Strauss-Kahn. Prosecutors learned while investigating the woman’s history that she lied about being gang raped in her native West African country of Guinea in her application for asylum in the U.S.

Strauss-Kahn said that a sexual encounter took place when the maid was in his room, but that it was consensual. He said that when he refused to pay the maid after the sexual encounter, she brought a sexual assault accusation against him. He and his attorneys portrayed his accuser as someone who is seeking money through making the accusation. Prosecutors say that she was recorded in a phone conversation with her imprisoned fiancé saying that Strauss-Kahn was a wealthy man.

She has also filed a civil suit against Strauss-Kahn, which is her right to do so, but has been pointed out by Strauss-Kahn’s defense as further evidence that she is seeking money. Prosecutors are also not sure of her motives in the case and so have ultimately decided not to pursue it. The 32-year-old woman’s attorney will appeal the decision.
