Maryland politician faces drunk driving charges

A County Delegate from Anne Arundel County found himself in hot water this week after he was arrested for DWI. This arrest comes almost exactly one year after he was involved in a boat crash, which was also found to be alcohol related.

The man was stopped in the early morning hours on Tuesday, after police officers observed him driving erratically. The arresting officer noted that his eyes seemed to have trouble focusing, and his speech was impaired. Police administered three field sobriety tests, all of which the man apparently failed. Police also noted that he was driving with an expired license.

The man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, as well as several unspecified traffic offenses. The County Delegate has a well-publicized history of intoxicated driving; one year ago, he was involved in a boat crash that injured seven people. Though he has pleaded guilty to boating while intoxicated, he is appealing the judge’s decision that he should serve one year of jail time. The next hearing in that case takes place in October.

It is important to remember, however, that the man’s history of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol has no effect on the determination of his innocence or guilt. Furthermore, it’s important to remember that the man is innocent of this DWI charge until he is proven guilty; and he has not yet had his day in court.

As a politician, this man’s reputation is undoubtedly very important to him, and indeed the damage to one’s reputation is one of the “unwritten” penalties for drunk driving. Those who are facing DWI charges should therefore consider speaking to their attorneys about defending themselves and their reputations in court.
