Former Ravens cheerleader accepts plea deal in sex case

A 48-year-old former cheerleader for the Baltimore Ravens entered a guilty plea to statutory rape this month for having a clandestine affair with a then 15-year-old friend of her son.

The plea leaves the fitness fanatic who was the oldest NFL cheerleader as well as being a frequent flier on the Baltimore charity circuit with a couple of new labels — sex offender and felon. At her sentencing hearing in August, she faces a possible 15 year prison term for fourth-degree rape.

By agreeing to a plea bargain, the defendant was able to avoid a possible conviction on more serious charges of third-degree rape.

The newly divorced woman is the former wife of the CEO of Constellation Energy. Last November, she was accused of the sexual abuse of the boy, which included and act of oral sex performed on him in a Bethany Beach vacation rental.

One former Delaware prosecutor said that while the sentencing guidelines suggest a prison term of up to two years, the judge is not bound by them.

Her plea included an agreement to undergo a mental health evaluation that includes counseling for sexual disorders, HIV and DNA testing, as well as no unsupervised contact with minors other than her own children.

Additionally, for the next 25 years, the woman must register as a sex offender in Delaware, and potentially in Maryland as well, as that is the state of her residency.

As harsh as her punishments may appear to be, it is far from unusual to face a long stretch behind bars whenever one is accused of a sex crime against a minor. Often in these cases, the defense attorneys are able to negotiate pleas for clients that do not involve time in prison.
