Maryland Grand Larceny Attorney
In Maryland, the potential jail time and fine you face for a theft conviction depend on the value of the items you are accused of taking. However, any theft conviction can result in significant damage to your reputation and job prospects. Few employers would want to hire someone with a theft conviction on his or her record.
My name is Jim Crawford. For the past 18 years, I have defended people in Baltimore, Catonsville, Annapolis, Bel Air and throughout Maryland who have been charged with crimes such as:
- Theft
- Shoplifting
- Burglary
- Trespassing
- Identity theft
- Computer Internet theft
- Credit card theft
- Employee theft
My main goal as your lawyer in a theft case is to protect your reputation and your future.
Theft Charges in Maryland
There are five levels of misdemeanor and felony theft in Maryland:
- Theft of less than $100 is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and up to a $500 fine.
- Theft of $100 to $1,000 is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 18 months in jail and up to a $500 fine.
- Theft of $1,000 to $10,000 is a felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
- Theft of $10,000 to $100,000 is a felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and up to a $15,000 fine.
- Theft of more than $100,000 is a felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison and up to a $25,000 fine.
If this is your first arrest on suspicion of theft, you may be eligible for probation before judgment, which can resolve the charges without the stigma of a conviction. If you successfully complete the terms of the probation, you can answer "no" if an employer asks you on a job application whether you were ever convicted of a crime.
